Culture Mom TV: Parenthood

parenthood-320

NBC's Parenthood storyline resonates with me week after week.  I haven't enjoyed a show this much since 30 Something.   I relate to this show on so many levels.  For one thing, it's about parents, and their problems and realities.  For another, it's about a family that has its ups and downs and shows that our problems are never singularly our own. You probably already know that the show follows the Braverman clan, five grown children, their families, and their aging parents.   Last week the parents, Zeek and Camille, played by Bonnie Bedelia … [Read more...]

Traveling Mom: Iceland – An Unexpected Family Destination Part II

iceland2

I still can't get our trip to Iceland last summer out of my mind, especially in light of the daily headlines about the volcanic eruption.  It was truly one of the most exotic places I've yet to visit, and one of our most memorable trips.  Whether you're looking for an adventurous or cultural trip, Iceland has so much to offer.  Plus, it's safe, affordable and very diverse. We started our trip in Reykjavik.  It's a walking city, hence very stroller-friendly. The cabs are plentiful and reasonable, which was helpful when our kids refused to … [Read more...]

Flirt

flirt

This past weekend after the PBS Kids Club 13 Fleece weekend at the Prospect Park Zoo, we wondered over to Park Slope for an afternoon stroll and a bite.  I had a discovery of my own, a small boutique called Flirt. Flirt is a small boutique co-owned by three performing-arts veterans—a singer-songwriter, an actress, and a modern dancer.  They have the most wonderful taste and have filled the store with carefully selected items from designers who specialize in handmade pieces.  I would like to buy every single one!  They have wrap dresses, silk … [Read more...]

Edible Brooklyn: Miriam Restaurant in Park Slope

2miriam

After our amazingly fun trip to the Prospect Park Zoo on Sunday for Kids Club 13 Fleece weekend, we were hungry. Alison Lowenstein of Brooklynbaby.com recommended a restaurant called Miriam in Park Slope based on what I was looking for, and she pretty much nailed it. Ever since living in Israel many years ago, I am an Israeli cuisine junkie.  Our closest friends are Israeli and live on Long Island, so we are always fed my favorite dishes there.  Living in Westchester, we rarely have the occasion to get Israeli food, so I was psyched to try this trendy … [Read more...]

Culture Mom Find: Jabra Bluetooth Devices

Jabra_CRUISER_PS_8022

As you probably know from reading my blog, I'm new to the world of blogging, which is why I was thrilled to be invited to an event hosted by Jabra to learn about the many Bluetooth hands-free headsets for mobile phones that they offer.  This was an area of technology my husband and I had yet to explore, and I was eager to get more information about it. We met at Craft, a wonderful NYC restaurant owned by the fabulous chef, Tom Collichio.  That was a treat in itself, and I highly recommend this restaurant for a meal.  I went there many years ago on … [Read more...]

Culture Mom Day Out: Oprah Winfrey Live at Radio City Music Hall, NYC

oprah

I have been a huge fan of Oprah for years.  I'm not sure when my obsession started but it definitely picked up after the kids were born.  Suddenly, I was stuck at home for longer periods than I was ever used to having and turned on the show regularly during nap times.  Over the last seven years since my kids were born, in particular, she's become like a member of the household. I find her show very inspiring and educational.  She's a one of a kind. I also formerly worked at Oxygen Media, a company she formerly owned, and met her in person there.  … [Read more...]

Kid Culture: Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD Giveaway

world

I've got two great DVD's to give away.  Both are from Scholastic Storybook Treasures.  They are classic children's stories, brought to life on DVD.  One is written by my personal favorite childhood author, Beverly Cleary, and the other one is pertinent to Earth Day and teaching our kids to be and stay green. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the first is He's Got the Whole World in His Hands..and More Stories to Celebrate the Environment (Illustrated by Kadir Nelson, Narrated by Chrystal Taliefero) This beloved folk song celebrates … [Read more...]

Traveling Mom: Iceland – An Unexpected Family Destination

iceland2

With the recent volcano eruption in Iceland, I haven’t been able to get the country out of my mind.  We were there last summer on a family vacation. It wasn’t the most obvious of places to visit on our annual summer holiday but somehow or other, I had a lot of friends and relatives visit in the last year who came back raving about the country’s beauty and ease of travel.  I was definitely curious and once we began to do our research, we decided it would be our summer holiday destination.  The kids didn’t know what to expect when they … [Read more...]

Culture Mom Night Out: 1980′s Rewind and a Pint of Guinness

ian

I’m in a state of 80’s rewind. The 80’s was a time in my life where music meant more to me than anything in the world. I turned ten in 1980 so that particular decade was pivotal for me in every sense of the word as the music moved me from adolescence to womanhood. It was in the 80's that I listened to WRAS Album 88, the local college radio station, watched MTV and the Video Music Channel and became acquainted with every British band under the sun: Duran Duran, Heaven 17, ABC, Big Country, R.E.M., XTC, Squeeze, Madness, Haircut 100...I loved and … [Read more...]
