Guest Post: My Nine-Year-Old Daughter’s Obsession with The Food Network

Chopped

For the past few years, I’ve had a minor ongoing argument with my now nine-year-old daughter over what constitutes appropriate television fare. For a short time, she watched Hannah Montana and The Suite Life, until I realized she’d finish watching an episode and stroll back into the living room speaking like those pre-pubescent brats. Forget that: I have years of teenage rebellion looming ahead, and I don’t need to put up with verbal obnoxiousness early. One of the things she had noticed about us, her parents, was that we love food. We cook at … [Read more...]

Review: iCarley 2 iJoin the Click! and My Daughter’s Disappointment in Me, Not the Game

ICarley 2: Join the Click!

When I was offered the opportunity to review the new iCarley 2 iJoin the Click! game for Wii, I could not resist.  Not only is my 7-year-old obsessed with the Nickelodeon program, but so is my 6-year-old son.  I actually spent a few years working for the company.  My daughter asks me almost daily why I left and can I please return? She really wants to meet Miranda Cosgrove!   "Sorry,"  I have to tell her, "I can't go back in time, and I left to pursue other dreams."  It doesn't quite matter what I say at this point, anyway.  She has to accept … [Read more...]

Giveaway: $40 Gift Card to the Homemade Pizza Company (locations in NY, NJ, Washington and DC, Minneapolis)

Homemade Pizza Company

Earlier this year in Larchmont, where I live, a new pizza place called HomeMade Pizza Company opened in one of the many vacant shops in town.  Billed as fresh and wholesome, it definitely caught my eye.  On my many visits to Red Mango for frozen yogurt across the street, my kids would beg me, saying "when are we going to the new pizza store?"  Word started to get around about it and when the buzz came my way, I felt compelled to give it a whirl.  I wasn't sure how I'd feel about having to take the pizza home to bake.  I also didn't understand the … [Read more...]

Friday’s News: My Stories in the Westchester Edition of Project You

Project You

When Beth Feldman, over at Role Mommy and Project You, suggested I write an article for her Westchester Edition of Project You, I jumped at the chance.  A longtime admirer of Beth, and friend,  I wanted to be involved with her wonderful online magazine.  I opted to write not one, but two articles this month.  After seeing an amazing show called Wallenberg at the White Plains Performing Arts Center in December, I found out that the playwright happened to live a few houses down from me in Larchmont, where I live.  I sought her out and sat down with … [Read more...]

Guest Post: Cultural Event General Etiquette Rules (Straight From a Mom’s Mouth)

Chrissie DiAngelus

A few weeks ago I was in New York City for the annual Arts Presenters Conference. As a performing arts professional, this conference is the big national conference drawing presenters, programming directors, artistic ensembles, producers, managers and agents from all over the nation and globe. Besides the business side of things, there is ample opportunity for all delegates to take in full performances and showcases. This year I made it a point to check out as much family/children’s programming as possible. I represent two theater and dance … [Read more...]

Giveaway: Samantha Brown’s Asia on DVD from the Travel Channel

05-57883 Samantha Brown's Asia 3D

For my birthday this year, my husband handed me the best gift I could possibly ask for: a plane ticket to Hong Kong.  Turning 40 last year wasn't as hard as turning 30 (I do have problems with my age, obviously), but I have always felt there was one hole: the fact that I have not traveled to Asia.  That is why this giveaway has extra meaning for me - Asia is most certainly on my mind as I am getting ready for the (solo) trip of a lifetime. In this new DVD, we can travel to the Far East with Samantha Brown as she embarks on her most fascinating … [Read more...]

Where the Culture Mom Has Been This Week – Sitting Shiva

I have been mysteriously absent from the blogosphere this week and want to take a chance to let you all know where I've been.  My father-in-law passed away and I dropped absolutely everything and ran to be with my husband and family in Manchester, England.  He has been like a surrogate father to me since I got married.  He had a unique and gentle spirit and was full of life.  At the age of 86, he suffered many ailments including Parkinson's and kidney failure, which is what eventually took his life.  I knew that I had to be with my family during … [Read more...]

Family Matinees and Workshops at the Museum of Moving Image

5000FingersDrT_1953_13_lowres-2-detail-main

The Museum of Moving Image has always been one of my favorite museums and I loved introducing it to my own children last summer.  Now the newly expanded and re-opened museum now has more to offer family visitors. The Museum’s core exhibition Behind the Screen has been refreshed and reconceived, while a new temporary exhibition, Real Virtuality, invites visitors to interact with six experiments in art and technology. The Museum also offers increased programming with weekly matinees and workshops–in two new theaters and new media labs–and special … [Read more...]
