By Becky Beaupre Gillespie and Hollee Schwartz Temple Authors, Good Enough Is the New Perfect: Finding Happiness and Success in Modern Motherhood Creating and running a business has a way of inciting perfectionist tendencies. But it also offers a unique path to what we call the New Perfect. We know this from our own ventures — and we saw it in the dozens of mompreneurs we interviewed for Good Enough Is the New Perfect: Finding Happiness and Success in Modern Motherhood (Harlequin Nonfiction, April 2011). There are … [Read more...]

What Child-Friendly Restaurants Shouldn’t Do
Since I moved to NYC, I've had some of the best dining experiences of my life. Not only is the food in NYC some of the best in the world, but the service is usually stunning. Waiters typically have a lot of patience and treat patrons really well, at least in my experience. Often they are actors or writers, or have another profession, who have zest for life and love serving food. I've also had plenty of great family-friendly dining experiences - fantastic ones. That's why when I have a bad one, I'm shocked and disappointed. This past weekend, … [Read more...]

The Ultimate Play Date at Affinia 50
Last week my daughter and I were invited to the ultimate play date at the Affinia 50 Hotel. I wouldn't be lying if I told you that it was one of my daughter's favorite play dates ever. She had a big smile on her face when she saw what this hotel has to offer. We were there to check out their American Girl Family Package. It makes sense since they're located so close to the American Girl Doll store just a few blocks away. They've incorporated a trip to NYC into the American Girl Doll line in a very creative way. We took a complimentary tour … [Read more...]
Get Your Kids Involved in Lunch-Making with Sweet Tweets
When I first started making my daughter lunch for camp when she was 4, I started putting notes in her lunch. I did it partly because she was starting to spend more time away from me and I wanted her to have a part of me with her. I also wrote notes in her lunchbox because that's just the way I am - I'm sentimental and a letter writer. I would slip in notes like: "You are my sunshine. Love, Mommy" or "You are the love of my life. Yours, Mommy." They always included drawings to illustrate the words. After all, she couldn't read. I used cute … [Read more...]
Ch…Ch…Ch…Changes
Tonight my husband was sifting through old photos on his iPhone. He came to one image in particular and stopped. He pointed to a picture of me from 10 years ago. The year we got married. The year both of our lives changed forever. Two years before we would have a baby in our lives. One year before we left the city for the suburbs. And dare I forget, the year the Twin Towers fell on our beloved city. Do I remember 2001? You bet I do. I was 31. His comment about the photo was how different I looked back then. Curious, I asked to … [Read more...]

Advocacy: Teaching Kids to Make a Difference
I've been thinking a lot about how I'm raising my kids. I have my own personal check list that I use to judge my own parenting on a daily basis. Are they happy? Check. Are they eating well? Check. Do they have friends and are they playing nicely? Check. Are they having a good experience at school? Check. Are they safe? Check. But there is always missing link. When I ask myself, are they generous? Not sure. Do they think about giving to or helping other people? Not sure. Then I ask myself, what can I do about it? How can I make … [Read more...]
