“Monte Carlo”, a Film for Tweens

selena3

Interviewing Selena Gomez this past summer, with my daughter as my assistant, remains the highlight of my blogging career.  We are still celebrities in the eyes of her friends, and for me, it was a shining moment when my burgeoning journalist daughter took the reins and asked her favorite TV and pop star questions about her singing career and Paris.  It was also worth getting up at 8:30 to see her new film, Monte Carlo.  We were leaving for Paris just a few short weeks later, and it definitely put us both in the travel spirit. That's why I'm … [Read more...]

Introducing Zuzee, an Online Community for Tween Girls

Zuzee

Zuzee is the first ever, creative online community where tween girls can share their stories and create photo memories with friends. It is an environment for self-expression that is fun, safe and designed just for tweens and it launched today!  As a mom of an 8 year-old girl, I'm particularly excited about this site.   It's a safe place for her to share, collaborate and stay in touch with her friends. I sat next to the founder at a breakfast at BlogHer and have been excited about its launch ever since. How Zuzee Works: Girls bring their favorite … [Read more...]

ONE Mom Can Make a Difference

ONE Moms

It only takes ONE mom. That's what we believe. ONE mom can make a difference; she can tell another mom's story. She can help a child with homework; she can tweet, blog and use her voice for mothers in the world's poorest places.  It only takes ONE mom to inspire hope. On Tuesday, October 25th, the moms who traveled with ONE to Kenya will be in Washington, DC to meet with their elected officials and members of the Obama Administration. They will be asking the White House to develop a bold plan to combat HIV/AIDS and bring about the beginning of … [Read more...]

LOL with “Bridesmaids” – Literally

Bridesmaids

There is a scene in Bridesmaids that is undeniably hilarious: The setting is an engagement party where Annie, the maid of honor for her longtime friend Lillian, has been asked to make a speech. Annie (played by Kristen Wiig, who co-wrote the script) takes to the stage, glass of champagne in hand, and makes a short toast. But then another bridesmaid grabs the microphone and delivers a moving monologue filled with funny anecdotes and Thai proverbs. The evening rapidly goes down the tube, with each woman famously trying to outdo the other in sentiment … [Read more...]

Review: M.O.M (Mom Operating Manual)

momcover

I was sent a copy of a new book called M.O.M. last week. I took a look at the cover with the image of superwoman in a box being passed from one child to another and decided that it was reading material for my 6 year-old son and I.  So we sat down on the floor and started to read. Very quickly, I realized this was actually a book for me, not him.  On page 3, when I read that moms are the "the most advanced human models on the planet," I thought, "hmmm....kid's book?  I kind of got the idea on page 6 when the book started talking about signs of wear … [Read more...]

Where You’ll Find Me

Screen shot 2004-02-03 at 5.06.20 PM

From time to time, you can find my writing popping up on other web sites, so I thought I'd take you on a short tour.  I started writing as a regular contributor to CBS New York about a month ago, and I've had a few articles appear that I'm quite proud of.  As you know, I love NYC.  I wasn't born here, but you would never think that.  I'm all NYC - my total being.  To be able to write about what to see and do in the Tri State area for CBS a few times a week is a treat.  Here are some of my articles that have been posted recently: The 7 Best … [Read more...]

NYC with Kids: Halloween Hoorah at the NYC Botanical Gardens

pumpkinshouse

We love the NYC Botanical Gardens in the Bronx at all times of year.  My kids adore the train show during the winter; I love the orchid show during the summer.  It is a day trip that we all cherish, and it happens to be just 20 minutes from home. So, on Columbus Day, when I found myself with a day alone with the kids, I closed my laptop and decided to spend the day, which happened to be beautiful, outside, in the fresh air, at the Botanical Gardens.  Little did I know, but the Everett Children's Adventure Garden was celebrating Halloween in a very … [Read more...]

NYC without Kids: Conversation and Coffee at the Jewish Museum

Alice Zimet

When my kids were very young, I remember dropping them at nursery school and having a small window of time during which I either wanted to work out my body or my mind.  I'd take an exercise class and then go to a cafe and read my book.  When the amount of time grew, I'd venture to one of the wonderful museums in NYC to stretch my mind even further. Thats why this program appeals to me.  The Jewish Museum, at Fifth Ave and 92nd St, is starting a new program series called am@thejm that begins on Monday, October 24 at 9 AM.   It will be a morning … [Read more...]
