Giveaway: Win a Pair of Tickets to See VENUS IN FUR on Broadway

Venus in Fur

"A play so good it hurts.  90 minutes of good, kinky fun."  - The New York Times Clearly, this giveaway is not for kids.  Yes, a lot of people (particularly publicists) seem to think as The Culture Mom, I'm all about the kids. They refer to me as "mommy blogger" and send me information about everything kid-related.  Little do they realize that I am SO much more than that.  I love a good night out with my husband or my girl-friends, sinking my teeth into a show about and only for adults. And VENUS IN FUR by David Ives is just that.  Now, I have to Read More

Getting Ready to Spend Passover in London (w/ Matzo Pizza Recipe)

matzo

This year Passover is going have a different meaning than it has over the last few years.  We'll be with in London with  my husband's family on our annual trip over.  My kids will be with their first cousins, grandmother and aunts and uncles, and we'll be in another culture.  Another culture we know very well, no less. But still, the Jewish life in Britain is very unique for me.  First of all, my Jewish UK experience starts as soon as I board the plane tomorrow night.  There will be a lot of black hats and Yiddish speakers, many of whom "daven" or Read More

40,000 Miles at Lincoln Center

40000 Miles

My membership to the Lincoln Center has been one of my favorite and most useful vehicles to see top-quality plays in NYC.  Over the years I have seen the most marvelous acting and writing on stage.  And this week, seeing Amy Herzog's "40000 Miles" was no exception.  It's about a grandmother and grandson who live together for a few weeks, when they need each other more than ever, and it proves the meaning of companionship and making the most of life while we are here on earth. It was also a thrill to see the fabulous Mary Louise Wilson on stage.  She Read More

Priscilla Queen of the Desert: Campy and Memorable

Screen shot 2012-03-24 at 6.58.34 PM

Seeing Priscilla Queen of the Desert was something I'd wanted to do for a long time.  I had long wondered how the 1994 film would translate to the screen.  The trip through the desert, taken by a group of 3 drag queens - how would it play out on stage? In my opinion?  Pretty splendidly.  As a matter of fact, the songs "MacArthur Park" & "Say a Little Prayer for Me" & "Don't Leave Me This Way" are still churning out in my mind, and every time I step in the shower, I go nuts belting out the lyrics of these songs. In the show, Tick (played Read More

Moms Judging Other Mom’s Children

66876xgf8wa8c1m

I've been reading a lot about moms judging other moms lately.  Well, I certainly have a lot to say about that, although I must admit that I'm kind of past the point of caring what other moms think about me and how I live my life.  I've come to the conclusion that we all have different ways of raising our kids and how we conduct our daily lives.  Whether we work or stay home, it's our own personal decisions and as women, we should stop sitting around judging each other.  Some women are not meant to be stay-at-home moms - I being one of them.  Some moms Read More

Feeling the Need to Unplug in Order to Plug

Screen shot 2012-03-21 at 2.03.14 PM

I never used to be like this. I used to read a lot – newspapers, books, magazines.  I’d carry literature around with me. And I had more human interaction than I have now.  I called my friends.  I knocked on people’s doors at work and in my neighborhood.  I never let a certain amount of time go by before I got in touch with the people I care most about.  I had a cell phone, but to be honest, before I got an iPhone, I hardly used it. Then I had kids and went back to work, and I relied more on my cell phone to keep in touch with the babysitter, Read More

A Scottish Celebration in Central Park

A Scottish Celebration

I have to admit that I have a fetish for Scotland.  I first went when I was 23 years-old to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and became hooked.  I've since been back with my kids to this insanely wonderful country and love to celebrate its grandiosity every chance I get. Organized by the New York Road Runners & sponsored by the Scottish Government, the Scotland Run is part of a program of activities celebrating Scotland Week 2012. Scotland Week is organized by the Scottish Government, Read More

Need a Place to Go? Try NO PLACE TO GO at the Public Theater

No Place to Go

How I love New York.  Last night I left my house after a day of work, kid's stuff and the usual grind and headed into the city to catch a show at the Public called NO PLACE TO GO.  I was particularly excited because it meant a real night out at one of my favorite venues in the city, Joe's Pub.  Towards the end of the show, Ethan Lipton, the show's star, writer and composer also declared his love for NYC which completely resonated with me. About New York, he loves: "The food carts. The neighborhoods.  The skyline.  The food.  The bridges. The parks.  The Read More
