Announcing the RESPECT Challenge

Screen shot 2012-09-28 at 3.59.43 PM

I was excited to learn about The RESPECT! Challenge this week at the Social Good Summit.  It's a national public action campaign and contest that's intended to spark a conversation about the critical role that parents, teachers, coaches, family, and mentors play in shaping young lives and promoting a respectful society.  The campaign is designed to celebrate everyday heroes--someone who has taught you the lesson of respect. Some of my favorite actresses have signed up to promote the program and have given their own responses about who taught them Read More

We’re Lucky They “Won’t Back Down”

Won't Back Down Movie Poster

After an advanced screening of Won’t Back Down at the Fox Screening Room this past Sunday, I was LUCKY to have the rare opportunity to interview many of the talented ensemble from the powerful film in an intimate round-table setting at The Ritz Carlton along with four other bloggers. I must stress that what happens in the film is the result of hard work, determination and not taking no for an answer. It is certainly not about LUCK. Quite the contrary. The characters are in a very unlucky situation and will do anything to create a change for their Read More

Thank god for mothers.

Last week when I was asked to guest blog over at the Katie Couric Show, there was no way I could refuse.  The guest was Barbra Streisand, a Hollywood icon and someone who's music, movies and career I've followed my whole life (haven't we all?).  Fortunately, I was able to step out of my everyday life and spend the afternoon in the studio and witness an hour with Barbra.  I spent some time in the green room, avoided the lines to get into the show (bypassing the 2,000 on the waiting list) and was captured in a photo with Katie Couric herself after the show Read More

Spreading my Social Good Wings

Screen shot 2012-09-25 at 7.30.28 AM

I'm always looking for ways to unlock the potential of new media and technology to make the world a better place, and how to translate that potential into action, and this past weekend's Social Good Summit was no exception to help me think about how to spread my social good wings. With the growth of social media use, it's amazing how people can come together to toot its horn to help people.  The CEO of Ericsson estimated that 80% of the world will have access to 3G mobile by 2017 and there will be 50 billion connected devices by 2020. As much as I Read More

Mad Women, Mad Men, Project Runway and More

Jane Maas talkback

I've mentioned that I have a very small role in the upcoming production of The Best of Everything, playing at the Here Arts Center, a new adaptation of Rona Jaffe's 1958 bestseller about ambitious secretaries in the big city. These girls want thrilling careers and gay adventures—and husbands and children too, in due time. Today we call that “having it all”; these girls call it "The Best of Everything". They’re not sure it’s possible either.  It's a conversation we have often here on this blog and I'm SO proud of this show for bringing so many important Read More

New Year, New Beginnings, Being Mindful and Making a Vision Board

photo (6)

I've spent the last two days in synagogue, singing, listing to familiar prayers and the beautiful sound of the shofar being blown, reflecting on a another year of my life gone by.  I take Rosh Hashanah very seriously. It's a time to think back on everything I've done this year, both positive and negative. It's a time to keep going in some ways and a time to start over in others. A lot happened to me this year.  I got involved in theater and got to work with the most amazing women ever on not one, but two shows.  I had a good stint at a client I was Read More

Don’t Divorce Me! (An HBO Doc That Can Help Families)

Screen shot 2012-09-14 at 2.39.27 PM

Yesterday I had the opportunity to screen a new documentary called DON'T DIVORCE ME! a new documentary airing on HBO next week.  I was instantly intrigued by the invitation, given the fact that I have newly divorced friends with young children and am the daughter of a divorced couple.  My own parents divorced when I was much older than the young children shown in this film, but I have always thought about the profound impact divorce can have on children.  I see it on my friend's young children and I was curious to see how one could produce a sensitive, Read More

Book Club: The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe

Screen shot 2012-09-13 at 7.41.04 AM

When The Best of Everything was published in 1958, I can only imagine the buzz it created among young women.  After all, they are comparing it to be the 50 Shades of Gray of our day. Set in the early Fifties, the story follows a handful of working girls at a Manhattan publishing house.  There’s ambitious Caroline, who dreams of graduating from the typing pool to an editor’s office and she will do anything to get there; naïve country girl April, who's goal is clearly to meet someone so she can quit her job and stay at home in full fledge domesticity; Read More
