Esther Geizhals: A Story of Holocaust Survival

esthergeizhals

This is a repost of a story that I recently posted over at The Broad Side. I am in the process of interviewing several survivors and many children of survivors for a project and I will be posting some of their stories. We must never forget the atrocities that occurred a mere 70 years ago and we must make sure that no one else ever forgets.  It was an honor to meet Esther Geizhals and she assured me that her story must be shared, along with everyone else who lived through it.  These stories of a mass genocide of an innocent people must be told. My Thoughts on Multi-Generational Travel

multigenerationaltravel

As my children are getting older, travel is entering a whole new dimension. I'm happy to say that as a traveling family there is more excitement, more questions about where we're going and what we're seeing, and far more gratitude for going to faraway places. There is also not as much to pack - no more bottles, no more diapers, far less toys. Instead there are travel journals, books to read, iPads and comfortable shoes to pack for all of us. My kids are growing up, and it's making traveling more doable and much more interesting. So when my mother was Read More

A Weekend of Bohemian Serenity with the Kids in Beacon, New York

beacon, ny

I've had a penchant for the Hudson Valley since I moved to New York. There's a peaceful aura there that you don't get it living in or near NYC, and it's got a bohemian vibe.  The combination can be quite radical when you're no country bumpkin like myself. Located on the Hudson River just 60 miles north of NYC, Beacon has a cozy feeling that’s sprinkled with art, culture, Victorian architecture, good food, boutique shopping and the outdoors.  On a recent trip with my kids, I was thrilled to find a variety of ways to spend the day.  We found everything Read More

Soul Doctor on Broadway

souldoctor

Around 15-20 years ago in NYC, I wandered into a little shul on West 79th Street called the Carlbach and found a Jewish scene like none other. As a girl from the deep south, I had never experienced this kind of Judaism.  It was spiritual, fun and uplifting.  There was an old Rabbi who led the congregation, and he was the man himself.  Shlomo Carlbach had an engaging presence that I will never forget.  It introduced me to a new type of being Jewish and I remember running to that shul on many Saturday mornings for yet another dose.  When he was there Read More

Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine

bluejasmine

I've written about my love for Woody Allen here on this blog before.  I love his films with a passion and I am often one of the first filmgoers in the theater where I live at every premiere.  Particularly since I had children, his films have become annual events for me that are transporting.  While I am slightly partial to his films that take place in NYC, I have loved being swept away to lands far away over the last few years with Vicky Barcelona, Match Point, To Rome with Love, and in particular, Midnight in Paris. The director is 78 and has made 48 Read More

Foodie Dining in Vail, Colorado

vailfood3

While visiting Vail recently, I was introduced to some of the loveliest restaurants in town. I assumed that the food would be good, but I truly didn't realize just how good.  The majority of restaurants are inspired by farm-to-table ingredients and are made with organic ingredients.  While I'm not typically a foodie, I found the food to be inspiring. Once my body got over altitude sickness (which took 24 hours), I was able to really partake in exquisite Vail cuisine. Here are some of the restaurants I tried. La Tour is a French-American restaurant Read More

Abboccato and New York City Center

citycenter

Holly, aka Culture Mom, had recently been invited to attend a dinner and show in NYC but could not attend, so she asked me to go in her place. I am so glad that I said yes. I had a delicious meal at Abboccato Ristorante on W. 55th Street and then saw a delightful show at the beautifully renovated New York City Center across the street. Our group consisted of approximately 18 people, a variety of media people with guests and a representative of City Center. Our dinner was served in the  front Terrazza of Abboccato overlooking New York City Read More

The Unintentional Opt Out

optout

When my first child was born, I had feelings that I never thought I would have. As a staunch feminist...as the daughter of a mother who's business afforded my college tuition..as an independent working woman who had lived in NYC for 10 years prior to getting married....I was the last person you would have ever thought would choose to stay home with my kids.  I was the girl who had spent the first part of my career looking for the right fit and had finally found it in a job that I loved. I was the girl who loved splitting the check while we were dating. Read More
