The first time I set foot into Carnegie Hall was an amazing experience that stands out in my mind. Listening to classical music live on the Carnegie Hall stage is a memorizing experience. Their family concerts are a great way to introduce your children to the world of music. Tickets start at $9 per ticket, and you get an afternoon of music in New York’s finest music hall. Here is a list of some what’s to come this season:
THE NEW YORK POPS
December 11, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage
The New York Pops presents a vibrant retelling of the Dr. Seuss holiday classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas! along with other favorite songs of the season. A special concert adaptation for orchestra, narrator, singers, dancers and chorus, the cast includes Tony Award-winner Brian Stokes Mitchell as the narrator and singer of “You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch,” Mitchell Kilby as the Grinch, Elena Zahlmann as Max the Dog and Izzy Hanson-Johnston playing Cindy Lou Who. Also appearing are Essential Voices USA under the direction of Judith Clurman, children from New York Theatre Ballet and the singers and dancers of Camp Broadway Chorus. The dancers are choreographed by Liza Gennaro with costumes by Carmina de Dios. The New York Pops’ Music Director Steven Reineke will conduct this can’t-miss family-friendly event of the holiday season.
Staying true to the original book in rhymed verse, the story will come alive on the Carnegie Hall stage with songs by Albert Hague from the 1966 television adaptation – including “Welcome Christmas,” “Trim Up the Tree,” and “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” With timeless seasonal classics added to the program, this concert is sure to delight patrons of all ages.
“I’m so excited to present How the Grinch Stole Christmas in concert” says New York Pops Music Director Steven Reineke. “It remains and indelible part of my childhood – as it is for some many others – and I’m really looking forward to sharing it with a new generation. Being joined by Brian Stokes Mitchell and the New York Theatre Ballet will make this a magical experience not to be missed.”
Recommended for children ages 5-12, the Carnegie Hall family concerts provide a great introduction to music. Every child receives a KidsNotes – a concert program filled with activities and information about the concert. A pre-concert activity led by New York Pops Director of Education Dr. Sherrie Maricle will take place one hour before the performance and is free to all ticket holders.
