Review & Giveaway: The Butterfly Girl at The Vital Theatre

butterflygirl

The Vital Theatre is one of my favorite theaters in NYC to see shows with my daughter. We've seen several there over the last few years: Peace, Love and Cupcakes The Musical; Show Way; Angelina Ballerina; A (Tooth) Fairy Tale and Pinkalicious, and we've loved them all. Their shows have a social conscious and bring meaning through lyrics, dancing, singing and laughter. The Butterfly Girl is no exception to the rule. It captures the integrity and vibrance of the Vital Theatre. It's for kids aged 2-7, but my daughter, now 11, was able to enjoy it Read More

My Ad Hoc This is Where I Leave You Book Club

thisiswhereileaveyou

Tonight turned into a very unusually spectacular Sunday night, and I owe it to all to a book. A few close friends popped over (well, it was planned) to discuss the book This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper. Armed with a bottle of Prosecco and snacks in a dimly lit room, we were all excited to talk about the book at hand. We had never had a book club together as I had chosen the group myself, based on a group of women I felt would truly gel and potentially have an interesting discussion together. We were different personalities and origins, Read More

Review and Giveaway: Avenue Q in NYC

avenueq

I can't believe I never saw Avenue Q until last week. It's celebrating its 11th anniversary! How can that be? I'm such a huge fan of one of its composers, Robert Lopez, that I have been clamoring to see it. It was on July 31, 2003 that Avenue Q opened on Broadway, going on to win 3 Tony Awards - for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score - and ran over 6 years at the John Golden Theatre. In October of 2009, it moved to its current home at New World Stages. It's played over 4,500 performances in New York, in addition to countless performances across the Read More

An Interview with ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ Author John Green

the fault in our stars

I was recently part of a group of culture and book bloggers who asked author John Green a few questions about the upcoming release of the film adaptation of the he extremely popular young adult novel The Fault in Our Stars. His excitement for the film was quite infectious, even over the phone, and there can't be anyone more excited about the release of the film...except the public. Since the official trailer was released by Twentieth Century Fox a  few short months ago, it has received over 19 million views. Here’s what I found out about his involvement Read More

Peace, Love and Cupcakes The Musical

Last night we had one of those ONLY IN NEW YORK MOMENTS, taking in a high quality, really fun show for kids on a Saturday night with a stellar cast and top notch music at the Vital Theatre Company. The show was Peace, Love, and Cupcakes The Musical, carefully chosen with my soon to be 11 year-old in mind. She's a bookworm, and this play happens to be based on a popular book with the same name. She also loves peace signs, the word 'love' and cupcakes, so seeing it made perfect sense. Based on a book written by Sheryl Berk and her 11 year-old daughter, Read More

The Unofficial GIRLS Guide to New York

girls guide to nyc

I love GIRLS. I write about the show often.  I wrote it about it on BlogHer recently and I've written about the provocative and daring show here several times, as well. I'm a huge fan, even in light of Hannah's newly discovered narcissism this season. Last season it was OCD, now she's full of herself. As a matter of fact, all the characters are and it doesn't bother me because I know and remember being in my 20s living in NYC and, believe it or not, my life was not that dissimilar.  Take as you will from that statement. I'm such a fan that the show's Read More
