Exploring Jewish Life on the Lower East Side

crossingdelancey

With all the snow we've been having in the Northeast, it's been hard to have adventures recently. This past Sunday, I had hopes for a cultural and educational day, so we headed out to the Lower East Side for an afternoon of exploration. A long time New Yorker, I have vivid memories of exploring the area when I first moved to the city, with visits to the pickle seller and then back to my apartment for sacred viewings of “Crossing Delancey,” the film with Amy Irving that brought the Lower East Side into the lives of many, mainly tourists, back in the Read More

A Few Days in San Francisco with Kid (s)

san francisco

If you follow me over on Instagram, you know that I love to travel, take photos, explore, with kids/without kids, eat, study a city's history while I'm there and wander.  Head over right now and you'll follow my recent travels while visiting the wonderful city of San Francisco.  It's a city I've ventured to many times in my life, probably around a dozen, having had close friends and family out there to visit throughout my adulthood. Each time I go, I experience a new feeling. When I was younger, I experienced its culture seeing Lily Tomlin live on Read More

Winter Break in Montreal with Kids

Montreal with Kids

Every year we do something during break but we usually have two stipulations: 1. We choose a destination in driving distance and 2. We choose a place within a reasonable budget. While we would love to pick up and go visit our family in the UK more than anything in the world, it's just not feasible this time of year. We wanted some place exotic and adventurous so Montreal with kids immediately came to mind. There are so many reasons to take your kids on a trip to explore Montreal. For one thing, it’s the Europe of North America and you can introduce Read More

A Trip to the North Pole in Saratoga Springs

polarexpress

Do you know the story of the Polar Express? It's about a boy's journey to the North Pole to rediscover his belief in Santa Claus.  It was book turned major motion picture starting Tom Hanks and is meant to teach both kids and adults that it is never too old to believe. Well, apparently Polar Express rides to the North Pole have become a tradition for many families and tickets are in huge demand. I had never heard of the rides until my family and I were invited to ride the Polar Express on the Saratoga & North Creek Railway last weekend.  Right now Read More

NY Hall of Science’s Gingerbread Village

hallofscience

What has 2,000 pounds of icing, four hundred pounds of candy and four hundred pounds of gingerbread dough and is at the Hall of Science? Between now and January 12th, you can head over to the New York Hall of Science to experience Gingerbread Lane, what could potentially be the world’s largest gingerbread village and a contender for the Guinness World Record for the largest gingerbread exhibit. We headed to Queens on a recent Saturday afternoon for a glimpse of the life-sized gingerbread village. Chef Jon Lovitch, the executive sous chef at the New Read More

Where to Spend Thanksgivukkah in New York City

Thanksgivukkah

This year Hanukkah is coming very early.  It starts the night before Thanksgiving which means we have to celebrate during our traditional meal, so for this reason it’s being dubbed Thanksgivukkah.  The convergence of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah is happening for the first time in over 100 years this November and there is no better way to celebrate than in NYC.  This year there is so much to do throughout the holiday. I've gathered some details here: Eat sweet potato donuts at Zucker Bakery, 433 East 9th Street For Thanksgivukkah, Zucker Bakery  on the Read More

A Night Away Without the Kids at Water’s Edge Resort & Spa

watersedge

When I was invited to spend an evening at Water's Edge Resort & Spa in Connecticut, it sounded like the answer to my prayers.  It had been many years since my husband and I got away on our own.  I just looked it up on my blog and it was in 2009, before this blog was even born. We don't have much family support where we live, so it is never easy to orchestrate childcare so we tend to take our kids with us when we travel. Thankfully, when this invite came, the timing could not have been better.  We've both been working overtime with long commutes into Read More

An Irish Family Vacation Part 3

ireland

Our recent Irish Family Vacation was a one of a kind.  For the first few days, we were tourists and for the second half of our trip, we stayed with friends which took the trip to a completely different level. If you haven’t experienced a family trip that involves staying with another family who are close friends, I highly recommend it. Besides the fact that it’s highly economical (you eat out less, for one thing, and you save money on accommodations), it’s also a far more enjoyable experience with familiarity, comfort and companionship. It also presents Read More

A Tour of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre

shakespearetheater

On our recent trip to London while exploring the city with the kids, I came to a realization that we were minutes from Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and that in all the many times I've visited, I've never been. A Shakespeare fan since high school, I really wanted to visit the home of all his early works. One caveat: my kids were with me.  Would they make it through the 45 minute tour? And I had my niece. It would be a daring feat, but I was determined to try. A bit of history about the theatre: It was up and running in 1599 and Shakespeare started to have Read More

Teaching Kids at the Museum of Jewish Heritage

jewishheritage

On a recent afternoon, I took my children to the Museum of Jewish Heritage in downtown NYC.  Located in the center of Battery Park City, the mission of the Museum is to educate people of all ages and backgrounds about the broad tapestry of Jewish life in the 20th and 21st centuries—before, during, and after the Holocaust. While I personally have a deep-rooted interest in the Holocaust, I wondered if the museum would appeal to my two young children and I feared that the exhibit’s content would be too provocative for them. Fortunately, the museum offers Read More
