Last night I went to an event that seemed to call my name as soon as I heard about it: an event sponsored by the National Peanut Board (NPB) who’s spreading #peanutpower in New York City. Footnote: I adore peanut butter! They were hosting a special pop-up, complete with USA peanut farmers and their families who I mingled and drank peanut-inspired cocktails with . Through research and marketing initiatives the Board is finding new ways to enhance production and increase consumer demand by promoting the great taste, nutrition and culinary versatility of USA-grown peanuts and the farmers were more than happy to talk about it.
I learned that peanut butter is the most requested item for food banks because it’s nutritious, inexpensive and shelf stable. Peanut Butter for the Hungry is an initiative of the peanut industry in the United States (including growers, shellers, manufacturers and allied industry members) to help malnourished children in places where resources are limited. This includes encouraging the donation of shelf stable, protein rich peanut butter to food banks throughout the U.S., as well as supporting the production and delivery of so-called ready-to-use therapeutic food (or RUTF) to food insecure countries in the developing world.
The pop-up event is open to the public until tomorrow, April 1st. Guests will have the opportunity to sample free, peanut powered breakfast and snacks, take their picture with a peanut farmer and learn how America’s peanuts are grown and feeding the world. The event will be held at The Corner at the Roger Smith Hotel (47th St. and Lexington) from 7 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. both days. For more information, visit perfectlypowerfulpeanut.com and follow #peanutpower on Twitter.
People at the pop-up can donate $20 to Peanut Butter for the Hungry and get a Peanut Envy t-shirt .
