At 8pm tonight, I left two fighting children (she drank from his water bottle – the horror!) with my over-worked, exhausted hubby and took the train into NYC. It was an easy shot to the East Village on the subway and I managed to get there by 8:45, just in time to get in line for the Paula Cole show at Joe’s Pub. I met two girlfriends and we watched Paula Cole sing from her soul. Her music is so sensual, so confessional. She sings about personal hardships and experiences, as well as her journey.
I first saw her when she was back-up to Peter Gabriel in 1993 on the “Secret World” tour and was blown away by her powerful voice and how she could come up with the master (yes, I love him, too). Then I started buying all her records when she went solo – “Harbinger”, “This Fire”, and “Courage”. I saw her at the Lilith Fair in 1997 and have faithfully followed her since.
Last time I saw her two years ago at the Emelin Theater in Mamaronack, she talked about having her daughter (who’s now 9) and her painful divorce. She was so genuinely appreciative that she still has an audience and what a devoted group they are.
Tonight I could tell she is back. She’s in the midst of making a new album, “Ithaca”, coming out this summer, and the songs she played from it were beautiful. She finished off the set with a cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” and nailed it.
A night out on the town it was.
Hi , just a fan of Paula Coles stopping by. I too am a NYC mom trying to keep culture and travel alive in my life…I wish I could have seen her in concert….Her talent and the purity in her voice is just beyond words.

Nothing is pure. Rebel yourself.
Célia Mara makes music with a big smile. Singing about new, interesting times.
Célia Mara‘s Bastard Sound is an exciting, high quality dance-mix with thoughtful lyrics, illustrated by impressive live-visuals. …
Célia Mara is an engaging front woman, giving her soul to the audience – dancing, grooving, entertaining. She never fails to impress with her strong voice, the amazing vocal improvisations, which she quickly switches over to beat boxing and sometimes even ascend to trumpet solos. She plays her acoustic guitar with glamour, Brazilian rhythm and fun.
As a songwriter, Célia Mara focuses on playing her own songs – labeled as „crackers“ or „a 100% legitimate hit“ by prestigious Songlines Magazine. Célia Mara disrespectfully surfs between musical styles and rhythms, plays effortlessly with Retro-Brazil, Tango and traditional Afro-Brazilian grooves, mixes Nova MPB and Samba with Funk, Reggae, Balkan-folk, Glamour Rock and Hip Hop…
At the root of her music lies a marriage between Brazilian Music, Latino-folk, Funk and Viennese underground instrumental grooves. The lyrics, sung in Portuguese, English, German, Spanish and French, are urban poems that sing the voice of migrations and provide communication without any borders. Groovy, surprising, defying categorization.
On stage, you‘ll get an awesome band, transmitting this urban Brazilian feeling, groovy, funky underground … with an explosive frontlady and a lot of rebellion! It is music coming out of a Central European Metropolis. Brazil strictly made in Vienna.
"Globalization never felt so sensual" writes Sebastian Fasthuber in the Viennese falter…

My wife and I are big Paula fans…saw her at Irving Plaza in '96 (my favorite of all of her concerts because she hadn't hit the pop scene just yet), Lilith Fair in Harford, CT in '97, Morristown, NJ in '98, The Allen Room in the Time Warner Center in '06 (a terrific venue; I'd recommend going there to see anyone just so you can experience a stage that has Columbus Circle and Central Park South as a backdrop) and in a Newport, RI concert series in '06. We're headed up to Newport, RI again this weekend and will catch her in Fall River, MA. An unbelievable live performer who reveals herself through her music.
