If you saw The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, I know you’re as excited as I am to see the sequel. In addition to the fact that it’s set in India (the part of the world that ranks highest on my bucketlist) and that it’s a romance (my favorite kind of film), it stars a dreamy cast that includes Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel and Richard Gere. Does the word “swoon” sum it up for you?
Here’s the plot: The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the expansionist dream of Sonny (Patel), and it’s making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina (Tina Desai). Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy – posing a rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy (Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig). Evelyn and Douglas (Dench and Nighy) have now joined the Jaipur workforce, and are wondering where their regular dates for Chilla pancakes will lead, while Norman and Carol (Ronald Pickup and Diana Hardcastle) are negotiating the tricky waters of an exclusive relationship, as Madge (Celia Imrie) juggles two eligible and very wealthy suitors. Perhaps the only one who may know the answers is newly installed co-manager of the hotel, Muriel (Smith), the keeper of everyone’s secrets. As the demands of a traditional Indian wedding threaten to engulf them all, an unexpected way forward presents itself.

My grandmother fell in love later in life. About 20 years after her husband died, she started dating a man in the church. The way pensions were set up they couldn’t get married (or just realized the value of true love as being there for someone who really understood you) so they dated. It was cute and now that I think about it… it isn’t too late for me to be so late in life. Still rather early!
My Uncle married his wife later in life and they are absolutely head over heels in love. I aspire to have a love like theirs.

My sister fell in love when she turned 40
Although my ‘later in life’ is a little younger than the characters in Marigold, I did sort of stumble across my current husband after I had essentially given up on relationships. With one bad marriage behind me, I made the conscious decision to give up on love … for a while, at least. Then, poof!, there he was. I was 43 when we met, 46 when we said our “I do’s” in the garden of his home and now, at 51, I still consider him my true love.
Valerie, I love that story and I’m so glad you stopped by.

I believe in love when you’re older. People change. Love changes. I believe our experiences change us. Some change for better, and some for worse. My grandmother fell in love after my grandpa died. She had a better relationship the second time around. I look forward to seeing the sequel. I truly enjoyed the first one. Made me want to visit India fir the richness in culture, food, and colors so vibrant.
