If you’re impatiently waiting for season 2 of Orange is the New Black, you’re not alone. A quick jump on Twitter and a glance at hash tag #Ask Orange will make you feel a lot better. The show is using a smart PR firm who has every single member of the show’s cast tweeting and they gather them regularly to talk candidly with their fans. They don’t talk specifically about what’s going to happen next season or about what’s taking place during the filming of the show (which is happening right now at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, New York ), but they do divulge a lot about themselves and their characters.
This is seemingly the first time a show has kept the tweets up between seasons, but as a Netflix show, it makes perfect sense. Viewers can tune in at anytime from the minute the show comes on the air on Netflix and either binge watch it or watch each episode at their own pace. This type of “on demand” viewing makes the show evergreen and it’s important to try to attract new viewers and subscribers all year long.
By using Twitter as one of its main PR vehicles in this way is brilliant. The show’s arc created a healthy amount of conversation, with concentrations on different characters every week, as well as plenty of mouth-dropping suspense. The actors all really seem to enjoy tweeting and they also seem to genuinely like each other. There’s definitely no lack of conversation going on.
At a recent scheduled chat before the holidays, a slew of the show’s actors came including Alysia Reiner, Emma Myles, Selenis Leyva, Matt McGorry, Jason Biggs, Vicky Jeudy, DASH and Uzo Aduba. Users were told that special followers would receive #OITNB cast members as Secret Santas. Another brilliant tactic and a sure fire way to bond with the show’s fans.
You had conversations with the author of the original book and a collaborator on the show, Piper Kerman.
You had Jason Biggs getting pretty up close and personal.
Matt McGorry was full of insider information about himself.
For further OITNB tweeting, head over to hash tag: #OITNB. There you’ll have camaraderie and support amongst other fans experiencing withdrawal.
