This policy explains what information The Culture Mom collects when you visit theculturemom.com, why we collect it, who we share it with, and what you can do about it. We have tried to write it in English rather than in lawyer.
Who we are
The Culture Mom is an independent editorial publication operating at theculturemom.com. For any question about this policy or about your data, write to privacy@theculturemom.com.
What we collect
Analytics data. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how people use the site. This collects your approximate location (city or region level, derived from a truncated IP address), device and browser type, operating system, screen size, the pages you visit, how long you stay, and where you arrived from. We do not receive your name or your full IP address, and we have not enabled Google Signals or advertising personalization features.
Email addresses. If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect the email address you give us and the date you subscribed. Our email provider also records whether you open messages and click links, which is standard for email delivery.
Messages you send us. If you email us a pitch, a correction, a partnership inquiry or a question, we hold that email and whatever you chose to put in it.
Server logs. Our web host records standard access logs including IP addresses, timestamps and requested URLs. These exist for security and troubleshooting.
Comments are disabled across the site. We do not collect comment data, avatars or associated IP addresses, because there is nothing to comment on.
We do not collect payment information. We do not sell anything directly. We do not knowingly collect sensitive categories of personal data such as health status, religion, political opinions or biometric information.
Cookies and tracking
Analytics cookies are set by Google Analytics to distinguish one visitor from another and to measure sessions. They do not identify you personally to us.
Affiliate tracking cookies are set by retailers and affiliate networks when you click an affiliate link on our site. These tell the retailer that the visit came from us so a commission can be attributed. They are set and read by the retailer, not by us, and are governed by that retailer’s privacy policy. Our affiliate disclosure explains the commercial side of this.
Functional cookies may be set by WordPress or our content delivery network to keep the site working and to serve cached pages quickly.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Every major browser lets you do this. Blocking analytics cookies will not break the site.
Third-party services
We use a small number of outside services, each of which handles some data on our behalf:
- Google Analytics 4 — traffic measurement. Governed by Google’s privacy policy.
- Google Search Console — aggregated, anonymized search performance data. No individual user data reaches us through it.
- Our email service provider — stores newsletter subscriber addresses and delivers messages.
- Affiliate networks and retailers — including Amazon Associates, ShareASale, Impact, CJ Affiliate, Rakuten Advertising, Awin and Skimlinks, which set their own cookies when you click their links.
- Our web host and CDN — serve the site and maintain security logs.
We do not sell your personal information to anyone, and we do not share it with data brokers. We have never done this and have no plans to start.
Why we are allowed to process this
For readers in the EU and UK, our legal bases under GDPR are: legitimate interest for analytics and site security; consent for newsletter subscriptions, which you give when you sign up and can withdraw at any time; and legitimate interest for responding to messages you send us.
Your rights if you are in the EU or UK
Under the General Data Protection Regulation you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct data that is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Delete your data, subject to legal retention obligations.
- Port your data to another service in a machine-readable format.
- Restrict or object to processing, including analytics and marketing.
- Withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing that already happened.
- Complain to your national data protection authority.
Send requests to privacy@theculturemom.com. We respond within 30 days and do not charge for it.
Your rights if you are in California
Under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA, California residents have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to request deletion, to request correction, to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, and to not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are defined under California law. There is consequently nothing to opt out of, but you may still submit access or deletion requests to privacy@theculturemom.com. We verify identity by confirming the request from the email address associated with the data.
Residents of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and other states with comprehensive privacy laws have comparable rights, and we honor requests from those states through the same address.
Children’s privacy
The Culture Mom is written for adults, primarily parents. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13, in accordance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
Our newsletter is not directed at children and we do not permit anyone under 13 to subscribe. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact privacy@theculturemom.com and we will delete it promptly. For readers in the EU, the equivalent minimum age is 16 or the lower age set by your member state.
How long we keep things
Analytics data is retained by Google Analytics for 14 months, after which it is automatically deleted.
Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. Once you unsubscribe we retain only a suppression record so we do not accidentally email you again.
Emails you send us are kept for up to 24 months, unless the correspondence is an ongoing business relationship.
Server logs are retained for approximately 30 days.
How to opt out
Newsletter: click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any email. It works immediately.
Analytics: install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, enable Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control in your browser, or block cookies in your browser settings.
Affiliate cookies: block third-party cookies in your browser, or navigate to retailers directly rather than through our links.
Data security and transfers
We use HTTPS across the entire site, keep our software patched, and limit access to subscriber data to the people who need it. No system is perfectly secure, and we will not pretend otherwise. If a breach affects your personal data, we will notify affected readers and the relevant authorities as required by law.
Our servers and service providers are located in the United States. If you are outside the U.S., your data is transferred there and processed under standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards where required.
Links to other sites
We link out constantly, to retailers, museums, hotels, studies and other publications. Once you follow a link, you are on someone else’s site under someone else’s privacy policy. We are not responsible for how those sites handle your data.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of the page. Material changes to how we handle personal data will be announced on the site and, where the law requires it, by email.
