Recharging at the Omni Charlotte

Our stop at the Omni Charlotte Hotel has been a highlight of our road trip. The location was wonderful – right in the heart of Charlotte’s financial district.  We were so excited to explore the area and get to know a city that we didn’t know very well.  Linked to 12 city blocks via sky bridge, the Omni Charlotte Hotel is moments away from the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, Discovery Place, the Charlotte Convention Center, and the EpiCentre entertainment district.  Given the location, it would appear to be more of a business hotel, but we were impressed by its family-friendliness and can honestly say that our kids loved our visit.

Our room was extremely large, a corner room over-looking the downtown area.  There was room for the kids to spread out and the room offered a lot of comfort.

The hotel offers cookies and water to kids during the day, childproofing items, welcome suitcases full of child-friendly items and a wonderful outdoor pool on a rooftop sun deck where we spent oodles of time.  Guests can ride the escalator to Overstreet Mall, which we did, which houses more than 30 shops and restaurants. The walkway connects guests to Mexican and Italian restaurants. Pets are welcome at this hotel for a fee.

The skinny on the hotel:

Address: 132 East Trade Street, Charlotte, NC 28202, Tel: 704-377-0400

Recreational facilities: pool, fitness facility

Wifi: FREE

Amenities: Room service, AC, minibars, CD players, city views, comfy bedding, desks, coffee/tea makers and blackout drapes.

Restaurants: Trade Restaurant, located on the lobby level, serves three meals a day and has a wonderful children’s menu with options from $4-$6.  Executive Chef Francisco Jimenez has created a menu full of culinary options for everyone.  We were pleasantly surprised to find great service and really, really high-quality food which all four of us agreed upon.  Starters include loaded sweet potato fries, seared ahi tuna, braised veal meatballs or a selection of gourmet soups and salads, and we tried several.  I had a delicious trade salad – a nice set of greens with candied pecans, dried cherries, goat cheese and aged balsamic dressing.  Main plates include seared halibut, filet of the day, pan-seared salmon or half-roasted chicken with apricot and cherry glaze.  The food is rich, cooked with a nice share of garlic and butter.  They have good wine, large portions and excellent service.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary room and meal at TRADE to facilitate this review but I promise, it is as nice as it sounds, and my children loved it just as much as we did.

  1. I stayed at the Omni in Philadelphia last weekend and it was a very nice hotel. If the one in Charlotte is like that one, I am sure it is a great hotel.
