I had big hopes for "Bottom of the World," playing at the Atlantic Theater 2. The description on the theater's web site made it sound like a play I would like - about sisters, a writer, an unfinished novel, grief, broken hearts. I also adore female playwrights, and Lucy Thurber no exception. She is a playwright who tackles many tough issues in an engaging way. Perhaps it was the fact that we first went to the wrong theater last night for the 7:30 curtain call and had to run a few blocks (my friend was wearing heels; she learned her lesson) that was … [Read more...]
Theater obsessed – My NYC Fall Broadway and Off-Broadway Season
One of the reasons I moved to NYC many years ago was simply one word: THEATER. I get a rush after a good show. I thrive on good play writing, good acting, quality sets and direction. I have memberships to many theaters in NYC so that I don't miss out. It's a big of an addiction, but a healthy one. There is nothing like a buzz I get after seeing a good performance. I'm very crafty - I don't ever pay full-price for a play. Read after each entry about how I manage to see a play on a budget, mainly through memberships. I just looked at my calendar … [Read more...]
Dusk Rings a Bell
Ever wonder what it would be like to meet up with an old flame? What would it be like to see them again? Where are they now and what path did they take? Will love finally come knocking on your door late in life with someone from your youth? I'll never forget the story of an old boss, my first in New York City, who met back up with a lost love 40 years later after each had married other people and split up. They were the happiest couple I had ever met. In the new play, "Dusk Rings a Bell, now playing at the Atlantic Theater until June 26th, … [Read more...]
Kid Culture: Books Cook!
On Saturday morning, I awoke to a sick child that I had to stay home and take care of. We had tickets to see Books Cook! at the Atlantic Theater. Fortunately, my friend, Susan, picked up my daughter and they headed into the city to see the show without us. We'll return and see it another time. She loved it. The Atlantic Theater puts on the best kid's productions. I am planning to take my son back to see it next week. About the play from the web site: Books Cook! is a carnival vaudeville which celebrates reading and the acrobatics … [Read more...]
Sam Shepard’s “Ages of the Moon” at the Atlantic Theater
Since I'm the Culture Mom, I hate to see a show and not blog about it. I wish I had liked this one more so I could rave, but I can't. It's too bad, Sam Shepard is one of my heroes. I started following him after a high school drama teacher had us watch "True West" with John Malkovich and Gary Senise. My devotion to his work stayed with me after I moved to NYC where I saw as many of his plays as possible, including "A Life of the Mind", "Curse of the Starving Class" and "Buried Child".However, I was bored during "Ages of the Moon," now … [Read more...]
