In a playground of paper, light, music and magic, a whimsical story about childhood friendship comes to life when one young girl meets a particularly sly and silly fellow—her shadow! Specifically crafted with younger kids in mind, Me and My Shadow was devised for a child’s level of comprehension and perspective, and its deceptively clever staging is intriguing for all ages. Collaboratively created by Zoë Barry, Dave Brown, Geoff Cobham, Roz Hervey, Nathan O’Keefe, Astrid Pill and Bob Weatherly, Me and My Shadow is directed by Dave Brown, Roz Hervey and Geoff Cobham and stars Sarah Brokensha and Tim Overton.

The performance has a running time of 45 minutes with no intermission. The show was created with 4-7 year-olds in mind. Tickets can be purchased here.

I’m thrilled to be giving away FOUR tickets on Saturday, October 19th at 11am, 3pm or 7pm.

Giveaway: Win 2 Tickets to A Time to Kill on Broadway /giveaway-win-2-tickets-to-a-time-to-kill-on-broadway/ /giveaway-win-2-tickets-to-a-time-to-kill-on-broadway/#comments Fri, 30 Aug 2013 21:24:12 +0000 CultureMom /?p=5275 400x400

Tony Award-winning playwright Rupert Holmes’ stage adaptation of A Time to Kill, John Grisham’s best-selling novel, will open on Broadway on Sunday, October 20, 2013, at the John Golden Theatre (252 West 45th Street). This new Broadway play holds the distinction of being the first-ever John Grisham property to be adapted for the stage. Ethan McSweeny will direct, with previews beginning Saturday, September 28th. Sebastian Arcelus, Chike Johnson, Patrick Page, Tony Award winner Tonya Pinkins, Emmy Award winner Tom Skerritt, Fred Dalton Thompson, John Douglas Thompson and Ashley Williams plus Dashiell Eaves, J.R. Horne, John Procaccino, Tijuana Ricks and Lee Sellars will star.

A Time to Kill, the popular courtroom drama, tells the emotionally charged, now-iconic story of a young, idealistic lawyer, Jake Brigance, defending a black man, Carl Lee Hailey, for taking the law into his own hands following an unspeakable crime committed against his young daughter. Their small Mississippi town is thrown into upheaval, and Jake finds himself arguing against the formidable district attorney, Rufus Buckley, and under attack from both sides of a racially divided city. This drama is a thrilling courtroom battle where the true nature of what is right and what is moral are called into question.

Giveaway: Forever Tango on Broadway /giveaway-forever-tango-on-broadway/ /giveaway-forever-tango-on-broadway/#comments Thu, 27 Jun 2013 02:45:28 +0000 CultureMom /?p=5089

My husband is a great dancer.  I found out as soon as we started dating and he took me to a small tango club in Greenwich Village called La Belle Epoque and came face to face with the real thing.  We were attempting to tango with professionals (or so they seemed).  Later he bought tickets to a tango production on Broadway where we witnessed the longest-running tango production in Broadway history. It wasn’t something I’d have selected to see myself, but it was very compelling.

That show was Luis Bravo’s internationally acclaimed entertainment phenomenon Forever Tango, whichwill return to the Walter Kerr Theatre, its original Broadway home, for ten weeks only with performances beginning Tuesday, July 9, 2013 through Sunday, September 15, 2013.

“Dancing with the Stars” duo Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy will dance together again for three weeks, performing the sensuous dance of lovers, July 9 through Sunday, July 28, 2013. Smirnoff and Chmerkovskiy join the previously announced special guest star and five-time Grammy Award-winner, Gilberto Santa Rosa, who will also appear through July 28, 2013.  It includes sixteen world-class tango dancers, one vocalist and the eleven-piece Forever Tango orchestra.

To order tickets, call (212) 239-6200/(800) 432-7250 and mention code FTGNA603. or visit Telecharge.com and enter code FTGNA603 or bring this offer to the Walter Kerr Theatre box office (219 West 48th Street); opens Monday, June 17.

Restrictions: Blackout dates may apply. All prices include a $2 facility fee. Limit 8 tickets per order. Offer subject to availability and prior sales. All sales final. No refunds or exchanges. Telephone and Internet orders are subject to standard service fees. Offer may be revoked or modified at any time without notice.

I’m thrilled to be giving away a pair of tickets to Forever Tango.

To win, just comment below and let me know if you’ve ever attempted to tango yourself.

The ticket voucher we will be providing is eligible for two tickets to any weekday performance in July.

Giveaway: American Girl’s The Body Book for Girls (5 copies) /giveaway-american-girls-the-body-book-for-girls-5-copies/ /giveaway-american-girls-the-body-book-for-girls-5-copies/#comments Wed, 10 Apr 2013 10:51:59 +0000 CultureMom /?p=4925

Screen Shot 2013-04-10 at 1.03.47 AM

My daughter turned 10 today and we are entering the dark abyss of what could be tough conversations about her changing body.  I want to teach her to make the right dietary choices, explain that growing hair under her armpits, teach her about hygiene and teach her to know what to expect when she’s not expecting all these changes to transpire at some point in the next few years. There are also social pressures and situations that could impact her body image and self-esteem and I want her to understand and take them full on when they occur.

When I got a copy of  American Girl’s Care and Keeping of You 2, my daughter and I both locked ourselves up in her room for several nights and snuggled next to each other in her bed to read it. The book is designed for girls 10 and up and addresses physical transformations and emotions that girls face when they hit puberty.  Some of the topics were a bit much for my daughter, like menstruation which she’s not very ready to think about, but other topics were of interest.  Her body is rapidly changing and she was curious about bras, growth, pimples and hormones.  Some of it was over her head but the discussions were good and healthy and the book’s content is dealt with tastefully. We may have to pick it up next year and have a re-read!

I’m thrilled to be giving away FIVE copies of the book!

To win, tell me if you’ve had personal conversations with your growing girl and how it went.

You can get additional entries by doing one of or more of the following:

- Follow The Culture Mom on Facebook.

Winners will be selected randomly.  This giveaway will end on Tuesday, April 16th  at noon EST. Winner will be posted here, on the Culture Mom Facebook page and via email and will have 24 hours to accept their prize.

Disclosure: I was not compensated to run this giveaway, but I was provided with a copy of the book.  However, all opinions expressed are my own.

Giveaway: Win a Pair of Tickets to See VENUS IN FUR on Broadway /giveaway-win-pair-tickets-venus-fur-broadway/ /giveaway-win-pair-tickets-venus-fur-broadway/#comments Fri, 30 Mar 2012 15:58:49 +0000 CultureMom /?p=3499 Venus in Fur“A play so good it hurts.  90 minutes of good, kinky fun.”  - The New York Times

Clearly, this giveaway is not for kids.  Yes, a lot of people (particularly publicists) seem to think as The Culture Mom, I’m all about the kids. They refer to me as “mommy blogger” and send me information about everything kid-related.  Little do they realize that I am SO much more than that.  I love a good night out with my husband or my girl-friends, sinking my teeth into a show about and only for adults.

And VENUS IN FUR by David Ives is just that.  Now, I have to admit that I have not seen it yet (I will). But I hear it’s VERY steamy, and VERY exciting.  The show goes behind the scenes at an audition, where a man (a playwright) and a woman (actress) blur the lines between fantasy and reality, seduction and power, love and sex.  Hugh Dancy and Nina Arianda star in this show, and I will not anything else, but I think that it’s a hot ticket!

You can enter to win a pair of  tickets to VENUS IN FUR right here! Here’s how to enter:

1) You must be a Culture Mom Facebook Fan and a Venus in Fur Facebook Fan to enter.

Then finish the following sentence in the comment section below: “I want to see this show because…”

YOU MUST LEAVE YOUR CONTACT INFO – Twitter or Email in the entry to be considered!

2) For a second entry, leave a second comment after tweeting the following:

I entered to win a pair of tickets to see @venusinfurbway via @TheCultureMom.   http://bit.ly/H8mqGQ #broadway #newyorkcity

Winners will be chosen on Friday, April 6th at noon.  The winner will have 24 hours to accept the prize or it will go to the runner-up.  Tickets can be used through April 24th only and are not valid for Saturday and Sunday performances.

Review & Giveaway: The Lorax (includes $25 Fandango Gift Card) /review-giveaway-lorax-includes-25-fandango-gift-card/ /review-giveaway-lorax-includes-25-fandango-gift-card/#comments Wed, 07 Mar 2012 04:51:33 +0000 CultureMom /?p=3426 The LoraxA few weeks ago, my kids and I were invited to a screening of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, recently released by Universal Pictures on what would have been the 108th birthday of Dr. Seuss (he died in 1991 at age 87).  It’s the 4th feature film based on a book by Dr. Seuss himself (Horton Hears a Who!How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Cat in the Hat being the predecessors).  Fortunately, my kids have seen and loved them all the Dr. Seuss films, and more importantly, read all the books.

The Lorax

The film features a stellar cast with Zac Efron, Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Taylor Swift, and Betty White.  Here’s the plot: A 12-year-old boy searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

The film shares the cause and effect of cutting down one of natures oxygen resources  The Tree’s.  The Once-ler, bewitched by the beauty of the Truffulas, greedily chops them down so he can mass produce versatile garments, called “Thneeds” out of the Truffula’s colorful tufts.  As the trees swiftly disappear, so do the Brown Bar-ba-loots, the Swamee-Swans and the Humming-Fish.  The wise old Lorax continuously warns the Once-ler but his words of wisdom are for naught as the “Thneed” business booms and the Once-ler is blinded by greed.  What will it take for the Once-ler to learn his lesson?  Will the Truffula trees become extinct or is there hope for regeneration?

I certainly like that the film delivers a very important message – that we all have the power to change the world, no matter how small our efforts may seem.  To me, that is exactly what I want my children to grow up believing and a message that I try to instill in them everyday.

Today here on the Culture Mom you can win a The Lorax Prize Pack ($25 Fandango Gift Card, Truffula Tree Pencils and a Fuzzy Moustache.) Contest ends midnight, March 15th 2012.   Just leave a comment telling me your favorite Dr. Seuss book.
