This morning I attended a very special press event honoring the upcoming KIDS’ NIGHT ON BROADWAY. Tickets are on sale for the public tomorrow, starting at 11:00am E.S.T. The program, which will take place Friday, January 9th to Thursday, January 15th, 2015, is an annual event when kids ages 6 to 18 can see participating Broadway shows for free when accompanied by a full-paying adult. A ticket includes pre-theatre activities, restaurant discounts, parking discounts, educational programs, and more. The program is in its 19th year.
Participating shows to date include:
Aladdin, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, Chicago, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Disgraced, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, Honeymoon in Vegas, If/Then, Jersey Boys, Kinky Boots, Les Misérables, The Lion King, Mamma Mia!, Matilda The Musical, The Phantom of the Opera, On the Town, Rock of Ages, Side Show, Wicked and You Can’t Take It With You.
A highlight of my morning was seeing spokesperson Judith Light a two-time Tony Award winner and an actress I’ve adored recently in plays like Other Desert Cities and Assembled Parties. She called representing the initiative as one of the greatest honors of her life and brought Tony Danza out to help promote the program. My memories of Who’s the Boss? came to life so vividly in my mind, I can’t even begin to describe it.
This year the initiative salutes Point Foundation, the nation’s largest scholarship-granting organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) students of merit, an organization where Light remains a longtime board member. Plus, they are teaming up with KidzVuz, a safe video review sharing site run by two dear friends of mine, with a Broadway video contest. Kids ages 6-18 can submit original videos on three Broadway topics, and be entered for a chance to win cool Broadway prizes, including tickets to a participating show. Additionally, kids can participate in a Q&A by submitting questions to the KIDS’ NIGHT ON BROADWAY Facebook page that will later be answered by Broadway stars. I have a feeling my kids will be submitting videos!
KIDS’ NIGHT ON BROADWAY will also take place in multiple cities around the country, with different shows and venues putting their own spin on the event, on numerous dates throughout the year. Check out kidsnightonbroadway.com for specific dates and locations.
