Don’t get me wrong, Westchester is beautiful. Plus, it’s a 30-minute train into the city. I’m actually surrounded by ex-Manhattanites and Brooklynites. We all come from the same vain and need our daily dose of culture and grime. Problem is, my husband won’t move back to the city. I should have thought about it when I left the Upper West Side before we came here.
Brooklyn is extremely child-friendly and has so much to offer kids. Music, theatre, art classes, concerts,. great restaurants and basically, street life. I think kids can learn so much more out in the big city than being stuck in the burbs. There’s so much more diversity, all types of cultures and foods. But at least I can visit regularly, and I do.
Here are just a few reasons Brooklyn is on my mind:
- Brooklyn Bridge Park on the waterfront
- The Brooklyn Bowl - for hip bowling experience and food provided by the Blue Ribbon Grill
- According to my sister, who lives in Ditmas Park, the cherry blossoms are fantastic and akin to Washington, DC. And the renovated Victorian homes there are gorgeous
- The Brooklyn Flea – opening back up this month in Williamsburg
- Music for Aardvarks music classes for kids – thankfully, they are offered in Westchester at Groove
- The Brooklyn Museum – this February, they will be featuring one of Egypt’s oldest statues, and this June, Andy Warhol
- Culture – BAM‘s Sounds Like Brooklyn festival, the BAM film kids festival and the amazing Bridge Project
- The annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island and Brighton Beach Avenue on a nice summer day
Aaah, I want to run to the borough now – but I have to pick up my first-grader in 45 minutes in Westchester. Another time….
