If you’re home with the kids this week, I can’t think of anything better to do than this event. Target shares our desire to spread the word about the important role reading plays in shaping our children’s futures and is inviting you to come share their passion.
As part of its commitment to education and focus on reading, this coming Thursday Target will unveil a 26-foot tall installation on the steps of the New York Public Library, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, and host celebrity reading events and kid-friendly activities inside of the library in New York City. The installation will spell the word “READ” and be made out of Dr. Seuss classics, 25,000 of which will later be donated to New York Public Schools.
To lend their support, several notable actors and parents, including Mark Ruffalo (Oscar Nominee for The Kids are Alright) and Uma Thurman, will be on hand. These celebrity guests will also participate in a series of reading events with schoolchildren in a Target-designed space within the library. Bullseye, Target’s bull terrier mascot, will also be on site to greet children and parents. The unveiling of the installation and remarks will take place at 8:30am on 5th Avenue and 42nd Street. Celebrity readings will follow from 9:30am-12pm
In addition to unveiling the book installation, engaging guests in reading activities and donating books to local New York schools, Target will invite families to attend reading events at Target stores nationwide on Thursday, as part of its sponsorship of the National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America program. Target’s partnership with the NEA, is an example of the company’s commitment to education and its focus on helping more U.S. children read proficiently by the end of third grade, a critical milestone on the path to graduation. Target, which gives 5 percent of its income to communities, plans to donate $1 billion in education-related giving by the end of 2015.
Disclosure: I was not compensated to promote this event, but Target did provide the information and image to facilitate this post.
