Last week my son and I headed into the city during the week to catch a preview of The Croods, a 3D film about a a family who’s cave is destroyed which sends them on a wild adventure to ensure the world doesn’t come to an end. Little did I know before seeing the film that it had an important message or two, something I’m always glad about when seeing films with my kids: Never be afraid and two, tomorrow is a place where things are better. Films with a mission to educate its viewers, that’s something I can really appreciate (even when it’s not my favorite my film).
For 90 minutes we watched the family go on their first road trip and we got to know the characters. Emma Stone plays Eep, the daughter of the clan, who as a female heroine, possesses great strength and bravery. While Brave received a great deal of attention for its female lead, Merida, Eeps is just as strong a character, though the emphasis is more on the father/daughter relationship, rather than the mother/daughter relationship of Brave. She wants to break free and live her life to the fullest, but her desires clash with her traditional father. Her dad is Grug, played by Nicolas Cage, who loves his family with all his heart but fears change. His wife, played by Catherine Keener is accepting of his faults but strong and his mother-in-law played by Cloris Leachman doesn’t put up with anything she disapproves of. There is a lot going on in this interestingly pre-historic family and the film has a lot to teach a child like mine. A cataclysmic event forces the Croods to venture into parts unknown and rethink their way of living. En route, they encounter Guy (Ryan Reynolds), whose dazzling new discoveries – like fire…and shoes – shake up the Croods in unexpected ways.
My 8 year-old loved it. He enjoyed the wild goose chase that the characters embark upon after leaving their home at the beginning of the film and the film’s fast action. Me, on the other hand, I might be getting old but there are very animated films that I enjoy these days. I loved Brave, but I haven’t enjoyed an animated film as much in the last year and this one doesn’t fall into my love list.
DreamWorks Animation SKG presents THE CROODS. The film is directed by Chris Sanders & Kirk DeMicco, and produced by Kristine Belson and Jane Hartwell. The screenplay is by Kirk DeMicco & Chris Sanders, with a story by John Cleese, Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders. The music is by Alan Silvestri.
